Hi there everyone!
Today, I am sharing the Pub. Formerly the dining room turned vintage pub.
If you have ever been to the beautiful countryside of Ireland, that is indeed where you will see some real Pubs.
Believe me, when we visited the beautiful country a few years back we visited quite a few.
The Guinness beer isn’t too bad either.
And so the story goes
********************
There once was a house
with a Dining room.
The house with a Dining room that was not used.
What’s a girl to do with a house, and an unused Dining room?
I will tell you what this girl did.
One fine evening while my husband was working I had a brain storm.
Very hesitant to share with said husband Mike, because you see husband liked house with Dining room, even though we never used it, not even
ONCE!
The Dining room once had a gorgeous Ethan Allen table and chairs that made me very nervous even to touch. It was an ebay score so we did not pay nearly as much for the set. Regardless, it went untouched, unused and a very lonely room. Not my idea of home at all. Husband Mike is the one who wanted that set in the worse way. He in fact, was the one who found the set on Ebay.
Did someone say EBAY?
yes..and then my idea was born.
I could resell the Ethan Allen set on eBay, totally recoup our money and we can create and English pub in our very own house.
The Dining room.
So, I anxiously snapped pictures
and listed our beautiful Ethan Allen dining room set on Ebay.
Oh, did I mention, husband does not know this quite yet?
This brain storm happened while he was at work.
So when Mike came home from work, I sat him down…gently.
First, I was very clever and strategic in my plan {more like sneaky} Us women have that way sometimes don’t we?:) Especially when we really want something. I think we have that way with men.
I presented the idea of a pub in our home. I could see Mike thinking..
thinking, a pub, but where? we do not have any extra rooms to create a pub.
I turned and looked at the dining room and said, do we really need this dining room?
We can have a tin ceiling, a cool bar, and a really fun place to gather with family and friends instead of this stuffy do not touch dining room.
and then,
husband smiled,
he said I kinda like that idea.
WHEW…..my plan worked!
I said to husband Mike….
that’s great because our dining room set is for sale on EBAY!!!
I won’t give you any more details of the story from that point on, let’s just say he got over it:)
The sale never did quite work out on Ebay, however
Come in into the pub!
We wound up selling the Dining room set locally on Craig’s list.
We totally recouped the full cost and in turn found this Pub on Ebay.
It was an even swap.
The ceiling was a diy done by my husband. You can find these faux tin tiles in a selection of colors and styles at Lowe’s and Home depot.
It was a bit tricky to cut in the corners, otherwise my husband really had no problem. It was an all day job though.
Just about all our bar ware was gifted or handed down to us. These recent pitchers were a dear friend of ours Parents. She knew she would never have a proper home for them and knew how much my husband would cherish and love them. He was very excited. The old cork top was a recent birthday present from my Mom to Mike.
My Grampa’s piggy bank still filled with all his pennies
{I think} I have never opened it. There could be a million dollars in there:)
Pocket watch in mini glass cloche. The pocket watch was given to Mike by his Dad. We found the cloche on ebay to display it.
These old English cornices were a find of mine at a local antique shop. They were a set of two for $80.00. Apparently, they came from an Old English mansion. I knew just by looking at them they would fit our windows.
This chalkboard sign was a dumpster dive. Our local Irish pub closed their doors for business and they tossed this in the garbage.
I told you, my husband likes to dumpster dive and he was so happy to score this. As you can see we found the perfect place to hang it.
The old Abbey sign is also a score from ebay. My husband is really good at finding just the right decor to fit in our home. We have collected over time. Much time, in fact going on 20 years now of collecting and making our house a home. Like I say, Home wasn’t built in a day.
And that’s the story on the once said Dining room.
I can’t say I miss it.
Especially since my husband recently built the kitchen bench which now makes for more seating. Thanks for stopping over today. If you are not a regular, I sure would love to see you back again.
XO

I’ve always thought your pub is awesome, Debbie…who wouldn’t want to relax there? I love all of the wonderful collected-over-time pieces, the ceiling and cornices…I love it all!

This is great, Debbie! I love it! That pub piece is just fantastic and I love the cornices you found. It seems you were finding every thing you needed so I’d say this was meant to be. : ) I love the pocket watch cloche you found. You’ve given me a great idea for a Father’s Day gift for my hubby. You don’t happen to remember the seller on ebay you got it from?

I don’t..but if you google pocket watch mini glass cloches, I am sure it will come up.

OMG That is fabulous! How fun it must be when filled with friends and family. I agree that we do have a way of “positioning” things when we want to get our way 🙂 My dining room is the one room that I hate. I have an Ethan Allen table and chairs – paid full price, btw, but I would sell it in a minute if I could convince the hubs. I’ll have to work on a plan 🙂

I’ve always thought this pub of yours was a wonderful idea! It’s different & reflects your style perfectly. All the little details are great!

Your pub looks great. Isn’t it amazing when things work out like selling your dining room suit to pay for it?

I’ve always loved your Pub Room Debbie and hearing the story behind it makes me love it even more! How’s mama doing?

My Mom is doing well Martina. Still in rehab to gain her strength but overall much better. Thanks for asking. XO

What a great story…and a brilliant idea. I love having “one of a kind” things in my home and this is definitely that! Totally all Manno. 🙂

Very nice…..I bet your boys friends think they’ve got the coolest home ever:)

AWESOME!!! What an excellent idea in place of a formal dinning room!!! Way more appealing and inviting!!! My brother just won the Man Caves Magazine’s 2014 “Man Cave of the Year” award for the Irish Pub he built in his basement. While his is REALLY nice, I far prefer your “bar area” as it’s more authentic with the overhead wood!!!! Beautiful!!!
Angie
What fun parties you will have! The bar is beautiful!

I love your Pub….so many wonderful things that you have filled it with that makes it so very interesting and many, many conversation pieces!….I bet you use this room far more than you would a dining room…A space well thought through and I am sure it is the gathering place for your family…

I love, LOVE it!!! Great idea! One of our neighbors did the exact same thing with their dining room. I wish I could change our dining room to something else cause it is so small. But, we have our dinner group and OCCIONALLY family for dinner so have to keep it. Love all your finds and am going to tr to find a mini cloche, Joe has his Dad’s pocket watch too. Thanks for sharing everything!!!!
Carol
I love your pub – what a fun place to entertain.
But, I spent much of my time reading your post in tears. There in photo #4 was a Shriner’s fez from Al Malaika temple which is the temple my father belonged to. I was distracted by thinking of him throughout the reading.
Thanks for evoking sweet memories today.

Aww Carol, that is so sweet and sentimental. My Mom found that Fez hat for Mike some years back. I believe she found it in Buffalo, NY.

It looks fantastic…I know you will enjoy it.

Debbie, you are absolutely genius! What a fantastic and fun use of that space and it looks amazing! I can’t believe you found a bar to put in there and you have all the perfect pub paraphernalia! The ceiling is terrific too–wow–I just love it!
Raquel
This looks AMAZING Debbie! We have some pub-like stuff in our dining room but i LOVE what you did here. Did your hubby build the bar, or maybe I missed that post? Either way, it is awesome! I love finding vintage glasses and barware at antique stores. I am coming over for a drink! 🙂

No I mentioned we found it on Ebay:)

This is surely the coolest room I’ve ever seen in someone’s house. I’m so inspired by it, and I can’t wait to show my husband when he comes home tonight. I’m hoping he’ll agree with me that on a smaller scale this would be so fun to do in his man cave upstairs. It’s wonderful!!
