French doors are light doors with glass panes usually covering most of their surface. They instantly add elegance and brighten a room by letting in plenty of natural light. French doors come in various sizes, which we explore in this article.

Average French door sizes
The standard width of French doors starts at 4 feet (48 inches or 121.92 cm), going to 8 feet (96 inches or 243.84 cm). They are 80 inches (203.2 cm) tall.
Interior French door sizes
Interior French doors are slightly narrower: 30 inches (76.2 cm), 32 inches (81.28 cm) or 36 inches (91.44 cm) for each door. They are just as tall as other interior doors: 80 inches (203.2 cm).
However, you can also find French doors that are 84 inches (213.36 cm) or 96 inches (243.84 cm) high, especially for custom doors or in houses with taller ceilings.
Exterior French door sizes
Outside French doors have the same average height and width as interior doors: 80 inches (203.2 cm), 84 inches (213.36 cm), or 96 inches (243.84 cm) tall and 30 inches (76.2 cm), 32 inches (81.28 cm) or 36 inches (91.44 cm) wide, depending on the model.
Standard double French door size
Taking into account the dimensions of a single French door mentioned earlier, the double French doors measure 30 inches (76.2 cm), 32 inches (81.28 cm) or 36 inches (91.44 cm) wide and 80 inches (203.2 cm), 84 inches (213.36 cm), or 96 inches (243.84 cm) high.
French door sizes for standard doorways
In most cases, a set of 60-72 inches (152.4-182.88 cm) wide and 80-96 inches / 203.2-243.84 cm tall French doors can perfectly replace a regular door in standard doorways.
Custom French door sizes
Tailor-made French doors are necessary for unusual openings that don’t meet the standard measurements. French door widths start at 48 inches (121.92 cm) and can be extended as necessary, as long as they meet your building regulations.
How to measure for French doors
- Start by measuring the width of the opening at the top, middle, and bottom.
- Continue by measuring the height on both sides and in the middle.
- Finally, measure the depth of the opening.
For example, for a 60×80 inch (152.4×203.2 cm) French door, the rough opening would typically need to be about 62×82 inches (157.48×208.28 cm). Similarly, for a 72-inch (182.88 cm) French door, the rough opening should be around 74×82 inches (187.96×208.28 cm).
What are the largest French doors available?
Premade French doors go up to about 80 inches (203.2 cm) tall and 96 inches (243.84 cm) wide, with each door being 48 inches (121.92 cm) wide for a double-door setup. However, you can order custom French doors to accommodate any dimensions, as high as 96 inches (243.84 cm).
If you need larger dimensions to bring in more light and make a room seem bigger, consider French doors with sidelights (tall, skinny windows on either side of the doors) and transoms (horizontal windows above the door).
