on her wonderful HOME TOUR series,
…but…but…but.
SHE said, “Nope, I’m not havin’ any of that.”
soooo,
Our home was built in 1957 and as you can see, it really IS a COTTAGE.
Tract houses in the 50’s were about as PLAIN as PLAIN could be.
Not a drop of cuteness added anywhere.
Everything that I consider CHARM has been
added by us over the 40 yrs. we’ve lived here.
Please, won’t you come in ?
Mr. Sweet, being one of the most talented men I’ve ever met,
made the shelf for me and you can’t tell the difference
A few years ago, before we got so OLDEN, Mr. Sweet and I enlarged our living room….
doubled it, in fact.
Such fun I had furnishing the large room…..
The French doors lead to our patio and back yard….
The sage green hutch you see in the background was bought for
$14.99 at a thrift store…..they are actually 2 pieces, painted the same
and then married.
…as I mentioned, so so many of our furniture pieces are thrifted..
this cute little metal stool…$15.
The little alcove is behind the other sofa.
I have my thrifted wicker desk in this space, beneath East windows…
when he was doing the building of this new part of the room, I asked if we might
have an ALCOVE…something to break up the long length of the room
AND…add a bit more character.
He said YES !
I said WOO HOO !
Thrifted liquor set sitting on a thrifted dresser…..
The pair of red chairs were bought new…on layway.
These chairs are in front of a wall of bookshelves, another thrifted item for which I am sooo proud.
By this time, you may see a color combo carried throughout the cottage.
BLACK and WHITE is my foundation…
tiny bits of dark red (maybe claret?) are added here and there.
THIS is the STORY TABLE Mr. Sweet and I did together and it is one of my favorite furniture pieces in the whole cottage. It sits between the two black and white chairs.
It was a COPY CAT …….I do love COPY CATTING, in case you didn’t know. 🙂
A wall of bookshelves along the far end of this long room,
which I have dubbed THE LIBRARY. 🙂
Can you believe that a whole wall of BOOKSHELVES could be a THRIFTED item ?
Yes sirree….thrifted to the tune of $80.00 and I was dancin’ so hard,
everyone in the store thought I was passing a kidney stone….!!
Our Franklin Fireplace
is on the other wall across from the black and white chairs.
I do love our wood burning stove.
I love it for TWO very good reasons…reasons that make my heart beat faster every time I think of it….but that is for ANOTHER POST…..ANOTHER TIME.
In the winter, I am kidded by the
entire family about how much wood I burn..
I do love a good, roaring fire.
The kitchen at Sweet Nothings is in the typical fashion of the late 1950’s
and is the HUB OF THE HOME.
I love love love my kitchen.
I like to call it my Country French kitchen….
eclectic, to say the least.
There’s a pass-thru over the stove into the adjoining dining room.
Very handy, I might add…..
Mr. Sweet put the black and white tile backsplash in for me several years ago.
I LOVE IT
As you can see, there’s more RED in this room.
Having the same basic colors in each room,
I can move most anything I have from one room to another and it works.
This large dining room has been the scene for so many wonderful
family and friends gatherings.
My favorite room in the house.
Mr. Sweet built my red
WELSH HUTCH…
If you want to know what he used to build it,
you can read about here.
This piece of furniture has made me smile more than once…
I have so much fun decorating it….
changing it up at the drop of a hat.
The vintage fireplace in the background …..another thrift.
It’s not a working fireplace…..
I have logs that hold tea light candles.
It’s amazing the “look” gives the impression of a small fire going…
I just love it to pieces.
SHE found this thrifted little clock so I named the clock DEEDS..
and that’s a quilt my mama made for me years ago.
My dining room, like most of my other rooms, is in constant CHANGE.
I love decorating and making things pretty and I get so many wonderful
ideas from all of YA’LL.
a tiny breakfast room at the end of my kitchen.
Nothing fancy here in the master bedroom, but
…it’s sooo comfy.
A guest bedroom in my favorite colors….
Another guest room is awaiting RE-DRESSING, scheduled to start in the FALL.
I’ve just redressed my dining room mantel for AUTUMN.
and, I just took a pan of
SOUR CREME biscuits
out of the oven…
I made a plate for YOU….
Have a seat by the “fire” and know that I am sooo
happy to see you.
Please come again soon.
xoxo

I think she has done a great job adding character and charm to her home. I love the black and white colorscheme that was chosen. I’m a fire lover too, so I’d love to have so many fireplaces too. It simply amazing what you have done with a 1950’s ranch home! Really awesome. I too have a 1950’s ranch home with many Ranch Home hallmarks (long and narrow with 50’s over hang and center fireplace.) You have done amazing things with yours!

When I “heard” that BJ’s home was being featured today, I hurried over. It’s just the kind of home I like to live in….comfortable and not too stuffy. I love the large family room (jealous!) and the cute kitchen. But I’m dying over the B&W toile and plaid together….one of my fav combos 🙂 Awesome home, BJ! Thanks for sharing it.

Lynn
This is such a sweet, cozy home! I love how the black and white theme carries through out the home. Just beautiful!
Debbie
Yes! I do love BJ, and I knew from the first glance that it was to her home we were going this week. That’s because in the years since I started blogging, she has provided so much inspiration for me. She’s to thank for the color scheme in my kitchen and the quest for more whimsy in there. I love her style, and I just know that I would love to sit across the table from her and just listen to her talk. Oh, Hon-ey!
I took an unexpected trip away from all things blog (and computer, in fact) to deal with a family trial. As it appears that the fog is lifting, I took some time to peek back into my favorite blogs this morning. I was delighted to see your house du jour. (I have to say “du jour” since I can’t remember what the French word for “week” is. Just go along with it, OK?)
Hoping to spend some time catching up this coming week, and I’m really hoping that God gives me my blog voice back too. We’ll see. Missed all your Debbie Do-ings!
