It’s pretty crazy actually! As I like to tell my family..
“I have issues what can I say”! I can’t hide it.
Today, I am sharing an embossed foiled dollar tree vase.
It all started at the hair dressers one day.
I was getting some blue streaks in my hair and was admiring the foiled process.
Sometimes I think I should have been a hair dresser. I really enjoy the creative process and think I could actually be pretty good at it. People have asked me many times if I am a hair dresser. I don’t know why, I guess I look like one:)
Back to the vase. So, I am ready to fall asleep one night, thinking about my blue hair and the foil process, and it hit me. I should try to foil a glass vase.
hmmm…I wonder if it has ever been done before?
Back a year or so ago, the idea of using mod podge and rit dye on a glass vase hit me while lying in bed as well. It’s either the shower, or before sleep is when ideas pop in my brain.
The next morning I anxiously jumped out of bed and googled tin foil on a glass vase.
I came up with nothing. Sort of like when I googled mod podge and rit dye painted on glass, that too came up with nothing. Now, however google it, and see what you come up with.
I will say, the idea of tinted craft paint, and painting on glass is now popping up all over. I would like to believe it was my creative idea, however, no one has consulted me and said, you’re a genius, we loved your idea and want to put your name on it! I won’t hold my breath, and will just think in my head uh huh, they stole my idea.
I won’t say this was the easiest project I have done, however, it certainly was NOT hard. You just need to be patient more than anything.
Supplies:
Glass vase {dollar tree}
Tin foil
Mod podge
Rit dye
metallic glaze {optional}
What I found as I went along that the smaller of tin foil pieces the easier to work with.
I just cut the foil as I went along.
Also, I would suggest NOT watering down the mod podge like I did. The thicker the better and there was NO need to water it down.
I painted the mod podge on the vase in sections
then adhered the foil pieces and smoothed out with my finger. I did crinkle the foil after I cut my pieces, and then un crinkled it to adhere. Make sense?
After the vase was completely covered, I let the vase dry for a few hours before going in with the Rit dye.
I have this handy dandy sprayer with my rit dye and as you can see I simply sprayed it on.
You could use a paint brush, and it would work out just as well I’m sure.
The mod podge is what adheres the dye.
This is only one coat and still in the drying process.
Mid way through the drying process I took a paper towel and dabbed it
Then I came in with the glaze and applied one coat
I let it completely dry over night
and this was the end result.
And that’s the story of what a trip to the hair dresser can do! And now you know why, I say, “I have issues!”
Could be worse.

Hello Debbie, I am curious where you found the handy dandy sprayer for your Rit dye? I need one of those for myself. I LOVE love this vase and am going to make one in time for fall. I am having back surgery soon so will have some free time to get a little crafting in. Thanks for all your great ideas.
Hi Cari, that actually came with the dye. It was sent to me through Rit dye. I bet they sell them at the craft stores though with the dye. I believe that was the color perfect line I used. Any dye will do though. Best wishes on your upcoming surgery.

I relax doing something like this. One year I went to a dinner and a lady had a bunch of stuff out to sell for Christmas. Sadly the only thing I loved was not for sale. I had great success with the Reynolds Wrap Pop ups I find at Dollar Tree. They tear and crinkle easily and end up looking like this but I think it’s easier possibly to get this foil to lie flat. I also just tore smaller pieces to work around a surface. But what I’ve admired and not done is the Rit Dye. So yes! Keep including it in your posts to nudge us to try it. We will like it! The vase turned out so nicely.

I think you hit on a great idea, Debbie, using foil and mod podge. Somewhere I read using metal will be the next great thing in crafting and for you to come up with using foil is brilliant! Kudos to your creation! I’ve been waiting and waiting for a Dollar Store linky party. I like seeing what the group of bloggers create but I like to be able to join in too!

Just finished viewing your ‘foil & rit’ vase; LOVE IT. Gonna try it next week (company here for the week end). I have been painting on glass for 10 years; mostly flowers & birds but anything glass will do. So I have a ton of ‘glass stash’ in my basement!! Am so anxious try your idea; it sounds easy, quick (which I love) and something different with a glass vase. Autumn is my fav season to decorate so your blog came just in time. Thanks again for your cool ideas. By the way, the ‘bedtime ideas’ are the best; that’s when things come into my head also (then can’t get to sleep thinking about it).
I know I love it. Sometimes that is the main reason I look forward to bed time. Carol, someone told me or I saw it, not sure, but I think they sell the foil sheets at Dollar tree now. This is easy, but a tideous project. Just wear rubber gloves so you can continue to adhere your foil and sort of squeeze it on to the vase. It takes a while to dry too.
Is there another product that can be used for the Martha Stewart mettalic glaze? This is next to impossible to find in our area but I would like to try several of the projects you have that used it. Thanks for all the beat ideas.
You can use any metallic shimmer craft paint Jan. It will work just the same. Just remember to use a paper towel after you apply it and rub it in gently. Have fun!
OK, typical me—a day late and a dollar short or I should say—two years late in finding this project. I’ve been searching for a new look, a new technique and stumbled upon your “Rit Dye Foil Project” and found this and thought—I’ve found my next project. The end result is so unique, yet the steps appear to be pretty straight forward thanks to your great tutorial. Thanks so much for posting this lovely, metallic vase. Have fun Mary! I think they sell foil wraps now at the hobby stores. Which may be a whole lot easier.
Can I use metallic spray paint instead of dye?
Sure you can. Just be sure you spray paint outdoors, wear a mask and I put my craft in a box so I don’t get over spray all over.
