Ahoy Matey!
Are you a shrimp lover like me?
Welcome to another addition of…
Knock knock. Let me in Debbiedoo!
I wonder if we have any seafood lovers at Debbiedoo’s house?
Either you love them, or you don’t.
At our house we have only one member that won’t eat shrimp. Our little Valerie is not a seafood gal.
Now, Daphne, on the other hand, will eat a pound of shrimp on her own.
When we lived in Jacksonville, FL we had a wonderful fish market that offered fresh steamed shrimp you could call and order ahead.
Oh, how we miss it.
This week I’m sharing our Shrimp & Sausage Boil recipe.
Perfect and easy for that end of the Summer party.
This is what you will need:
(serves 4-6)
- big pot filled with 1 & ½ gallons salted h20
- 1 lb. uncooked fresh or frozen medium shrimp rinsed in cold water (uncooked is always better than cooked frozen)
- 1 & ½ lb. andouille or smoked sausage (I use reduced fat turkey by Butterball) sliced on an angle about 1 inch thick
- 6 ears of raw corn sliced in ¼’s
- 5 potatoes cut in large pieces with skin left on (new/baby potatoes would be perfect too)
- 1-2 tablespoons Creole Seasoning (I use Tony Chachere’s found here)
- 1 whole head of garlic peeled
- 1 whole lemon cut in ½ and no pits please 🙂
- 5 bay leaves (fresh is best) ~did you know you can grow bay leaves in your house? I just found out.
- chives or green onions- chopped
- S & P to taste
- rice (optional)
Directions:
Bring water to a boil. While you are waiting for it to boil, add 1 tablespoon of creole seasoning, the garlic, the lemon, and the bay leaves. I would start with 1 tablespoon of the creole seasoning, and add the other if you want later. This is a very important ingredient. It won’t just add spice, and it will add a ton of flavor. When water is boiling, add potatoes and corn. Let simmer for 10 minutes. Add sausage & shrimp last and simmer for 5 minutes. Taste broth, and add salt and pepper if needed. Sprinkle chives or green onion on top. To serve you have a couple options. You could:
1. Drain the entire pot and don’t use the broth. Pour ingredients onto newspaper or brown paper bags that have been laid out on your table and let your family dig in. Don’t forget paper towels and utensils, and a beer of course.
2. When we had it, we didn’t want that awesome broth to go to waste. So, I made some rice, and served it like a soup. Felt almost like Gumbo. It was so darn good. I hope you try it.
I love this picture of the shrimp & sausage boil so much, I must share it again. Enjoy.
I’ll meet you back here next month!

We call it a low country boil and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it! Think I’m going to have to do this in a couple of weeks when my oldest daughter is home from Nashville! Throw in some cole slaw and sounds like a good ole family dinner to me!
Victoria
I used to love shrimp but, in the last few years, I’ve developed an aversion to it for some reason! I honestly thought I was pregnant when it first started but nope (PHEW on that one!). As for the sausage and the corn? Oh yeah!!! That sounds yummy:)
Speaking of FL, we heard something on the news about Publix expanding to the Carolina’s! I know my brother’s wife is going to be so excited if it’s true!
Julie
I miss the service at Publix! They take your groceries to the car. That doesn’t happen up here!
Vanessa

We do this Low Country Boil very often in Savannah. We get shrimp from our local waters and it is soooooo good. My grandson is getting married in Nashville next May. We are serving Low Country Boil for the rehearsal dinner. Lots of napkins.
Thanks for introducing lost of people to this wonderful dish.
