OK, so I am a big traitor here.
I have always been a Krylon spray paint lover.
Always!
But I gotta be honest with you, and say, Not anymore.
Today, I am sharing how to spray paint a mason jar with Rust-oleum spray paint.
I do believe Krylon has changed up their formula.
The last few times I have used Krylon
I am getting a lot of dripping..which in turn botches up my projects.
I kept blaming it on the color choice.
ummm..NO, it can’t be.
And believe me, I am shaking it, and totally know what I am doing when it comes to spray painting.

what should have been the easiest thing to do on the planet, got botched up from the start.
I first decided I was going to paint the jar with chalk paint.
Which I indeed proceeded to do, and hated the color like poison!
so, plan B.
I had some tomatoe red Krylon spray paint and thought
this would look cute in the kitchen.
So, shake, shake shake I go.
Totally dripped and looked like crud.

Old rusty here came to my rescue.
Although it says, hammered on the can…
perhaps on wood it may appear that way
however on glass
I would say it looks a bit more metallic, which is fine by me.
I actually LOVE it.
No dripping what so ever!
Looks perfect in our kitchen!
I am all about those soft, warm glowing colors…
this fits the bill.
And that is the story of what was suppose to be easy..not so easy,
but turned out in the end after all.

I put jar on a box
sprayed one coat all around, let dry over night
and that was that!
Very nice!! Ironically ( peeking to see if anyone is looking) I just bought some hammered bronze by Rustoleum, and some hammered black.

Love your jar. Was wondering if I spray an old jar with this Rustoleum would I be able to apply pigment, inks, micas, etc. and put epoxy on it. Would like to know if it would adhere to and stay on the glass jar? Thank you.
Yes you can but I would use a spray sealer when finished.
I love Rust-OLeum! That is what we used on our light fixture to make it match the faucet in our kitchen. Glad you found something that wasn’t drippy for you 🙂

I love Rustoleum spray paints, Debbie! I used Krylon a long time ago, but once I was introduced to Heirloom White I became a Rustoleum girl all the way. : ) All my spray paint colors are Rustoleum. I’ve always been happy with the way the projects turn out that I’ve done with it. I haven’t done a mason jar yet, though!
I had an old nasty looking exhaust vent cover above the stove in my old house, and I sprayed this hammered copper on it…how cool did it look!!! Sorry no pics as I have moved since then, but I was thrilled with the result and the $$ I saved on a new stove exhaust! Copper is Cool!

I love the hammered look! I have been leaning more towards rustoleum as well! It’s a lit bit more than Krylon but so worth it. I do not like drippy paint jobs.

I tend to stick to the same brand paint too unless it doesn’t come in the color I want. I agree not all spray paint is the same, nor is it a winner in my book. Great color choice for your kitchen Debbie.
What is the best way to transport a painted jar without it getting botched up?
Not sure what you mean Tara? If the jar is dry, you can simply put it in a travel bag, and perhaps wrap it in a dish towel so it doesn’t get banged around.

It has not faded or chipped. Should be just fine, this is great spray paint.

Debbie, I found your site when searching about spray painting mason jars. I’m doing a project using mason jars for centerpieces for a HS reunion. Saw an idea on Pinterest I liked. Instructions were to paint using paint applying with a foam brush. Tried two samples – painted one jar with black chalk paint as primer then with white acrylic. Second jar just acrylic. They both look awful. Other day I went to the store to purchase spray paint. Looked at Rust-oleum and Krylon. I ended up buying the Krylon as I didn’t see on the Rust-oleum can “glass” listed as one the products to use it on. You have changed my mind. Haven’t used it yet, so exchanging it for Rust-oleum. Your jar looks perfect. Thanks for your helpful information.
You’re Welcome Nancy. Using chalk paint and acrylics can be fine if you are going for a rustic look. Typically they are all lightly sanded after. If you want a more clean look, the spray paint is the way to go. Krylon used to be good for me, but I noticed the last few times I used it, it was very drippy and thin. They may have changed their formula. Good luck. Glad you found me too!

I just stumbled onto your site, was checking out which brand was better, I want to spray the glass part of a wax warmer, the friend I went with strongly suggested Krylon said that’s what he uses and no dripping, fast drying etc so I disregarded my choice of color in the Rustoleum brand and got the Krylon, so sorry now, the color is not going to pop like the Rustoleum color.
My question, did you use sandpaper to rough up the glass first and have you ever spray painted glass that gets warm ( wax warmer) ?

I did not sand the jar. I don’t care for Krylon anymore, as I feel they changed their formula. You can go over it with the Rustoleum.
I found your site looking to see if I can send the Rustoleum high heat on a candle jar?
As long as the spray paint is NOT inside the jar, I don’t see why not. But I am not for certain. I have personally in the past spray painted mason jars and use them along with tea lights inside. But again, never spray paint the interior of the jars.
