What exactly is it?
A vintage lantern?
I don’t think so…but do you know?
Have you ever picked up something, turned it around a few times….you really like it..
but you have no clue what exactly it is, or what you would do with it?
It’s rusty, all beat up…
Tells me on the tag, that it is COOL, OLD, and could be used as a lantern outside…on the porch, in the garden…etc. etc..
Even included the glass votives
And I was even willing to pay $15.00 for this old, beat up, something, something!
I walked from tree to tree looking where I could hang it…
every branch was either too skinny, or too short.
I started to feel like goldilocks…
nothing was just right.
I wound up settling…almost regretting my $15.00 splurge.
I felt wasteful…
Like did I really need this thing?
As my husband would say…just one more thing to clutter it all up around here.
Although, he has not noticed this yet! YET, being the key word.
And here it sits…lonely, just waiting for the right place.
And by the end of the day, I thought, I like it, even though, I don’t know what it is, or what purpose it ever served.
I have created my own.

Your minnow box is darling. They look great with candles in them. It gives off a nice glow with all the holes:)
Hey- Great idea- It is an old punched tin used for fishing. They would keep the live bait submerged in the water until they need them….at least that is what I THINK it is-but I could be wrong. Hope you are having a great Sunday- xo Diana
What a cute idea! This has so much character and I love it on your bench! Great eye! Ca’t wait to see your Newbie links; they always have the greatest ideas! Happy Fourth of July!
i like it too and think it looks cute right where it is but i hope you find a place you love for it have a great week
thanks for hosting
We had one of those in our cellar,I’m not sure what it was for, I think it looks great, its well worth what you paid,
Hi Debbie!
Just wanted to thank you for your newbie parties. I’ve been linking up every Sunday and today is my last linkup. I’m sad but happy at the same time. Will still visit to see your projects.
That is cute. I believe it is an old minnow bucket. My dad had one when we went fishing.
Debbie: Whatever it is, it looks right at home on your bench..Hope you are having a good weekend..Judy
I think it looks adorable, whatever it is!
its a minnow holder…….lol
I was going to say it was probably a minnow bucket, and based on the other comments, I’m probably right! My dad used to have one because he fished with them all the time at the lake. I like how you repurposed it as a plant holder. It’s very rustic and cottagey. It looks cute outside on your bench. It’s so funny. I can add something to the house and sometimes my husband will never notice it either. (Sometimes, that’s a good thing!)
I think it’s cute!! Thanks for the newbie party!
As a good Italian knows…it is a pasta strainer…the one that goes inside the pot of boiling water. Ok, maybe not! but it does look like one
I guess it doesn’t really matter, because either way you are using it as a lanter!
I knew what it was immediately, but I like the way you’re using it.
Cool Deb! It looks like the strainer from a larger pot? But whatever you use it for… I like it =) Sounds like me, I so walk around the house with stuff… Jim just shakes his head and laughs a little. He is very used to it.
Sharing the Newbie Party!!
I love a cute minnow bucket – I’ve filled one with flowers before, but I really like the idea of using it for candles. And hanging it from a tree branch – caUTE!! May have to dump out my flowers and give it a whirl! Thanks for hosting the Newbie Party and helping me out with my photo faux pas! Jane
It is the inside of a minnow bucket. There is another bucket it fits inside. It’s a cute rustic find. Hope you. Find a perfect place for it.
Love the minnow bucket! I went yard sale -ing with a friend this weekend and she also got one – hers came with a tiny net made out of wire and burlap! It was so cute! I love old stuff! Thanks for hosting the newbie party! I am back linking up again this week! Happy 4th!
Holy Criminy! I had one of those for years before someone told me what it was. I can’t tell you where it is now, but I never did manage to get creative with it. I think you did well! You’re so clever!
I love your ‘thingy’! I do that all the time-something just speaks to me, and I don’t know what it is, but I gotta have it! Thanks for hosting and have a great 4th!
Susan
It’s too cool – no matter what it is!!!
I’m on overload this week – linked up 4 projects!
Thanks so much for hosting
Hugs,
Suzan
Whatever it is it’s very cool Debbie and I think you will find LOTS of uses for it!
Vanessa
Love it! never would have thought to use a minnow bucket, now I’ll be watching for one! Great use…
Hi Debbie. I have an antique minnow bucket almost exactly like it. I use it in various ways. I have a candle in it now, and it is sitting out on the patio!! I love yours!!
Kris
If we shopped together, I’m positive we would be drawn to the same something somethings and convince each other to buy a lot of them. I’m just fond of stuff like that for some reason.
And frankly, I happen to like the way you perched it on the bench instead of hanging it. It’s subtle.
have a wonderful 4th of july !
Hi Debbie,
What ever it is I like the plant in it.
Dee
I like what you did with it….I’m sure it’s a piece you will grow to love.
Happy Monday !
Glad to know it’s a minnow bucket, I thought maybe a steamer of some sort…oh well! Your newbies get more talented each week! Can’t wait to see what those crafty ninjas have in store for us this week!
Jessica
Hi Debbie,
Thanks for hosting!
Have a great 4th,
Laura
Happy 4th to you and I love the planter just as t is on that bench!!
Very cute Debbie! Love that you put candles in it. Looks great on the bench.
Very cute idea! Thank you for hosting.
I have a few lonely purchases. At least yours is getting some use, mine are piled in the garage.
~Bliss~
Thanks for hosting as always Debbie. Have 4th to you and your family.
So cute, Debbie!
It is the inside of a minnow bucket. It fit inside another galvanized bucket that held water.
Hi Debbie! My husband has a bait bucket like this but he let me lay a finger on it ! Already a Linky follower.
Have a great 4th holiday!
JoAnn
My grandmother had one of these years and years ago. She used it to keep her cuttings from vegetables, etc. When it was full she scattered the contents around her garden, sort of like an early version of a compost bin. Seeing what you’ve done with yours, I sure wish I had that old bucket!
I love this vintage object. Especially with the green plant in it. Have a fabulous 4th Debbie.
Definitely a bait/fish bucket. They come with 2 pieces. You have the insert that slips into an outer bucket usually with a hand painted label. I’ve been collecting them for years and they really do look cute sitting by our pond. The outer bucket is then used to take your catch up to the house, while the bait insert can be set in the shallow water on the banks.
Love your blog!!!
Yes, of course, all you CITY GIRLS……….this is a minnow bucket. And, minnow are tiny fish used as bait to catch the BIG fish. I had one here in the shop not long ago, but never thought of using it with votives inside. WHAT A NEAT IDEA.
Now Im headed back up to join your part. I have about one more month before you won’t let me in any more. THANKS FOR HOSTING, DEBBIE.
It is a minnow bucket….this I know….I remember it from fishing at the cottage many moons ago!!
wellit looks like most of the girls know what it is it does look cute as a plant holder
when done with what I am working on…if still link open I will send in my latest project and I have 15 to do….O my…..like your …..what to me looks very similar to a minnow bucket…this is what I did with 2 minnow buckets and what you could do with that one….1. I found at good well a iron based lamp…that the four arms curved up to support the minnow bucket…I sprayed matt black. We cut a hold into the bottom so it fit down around the neck of the lamp…You then can open the top and put the light bulb in….this had a switch tied to the cord so able to roll on and off. The other turned upside down…again a hole in bottom and used an Ikea lightbulb and cord….this one then hangs very industrial…I had them pictures on my blog ….think March,I made for Marta and Friends event….you can find by going to past post….PS love your WOW commercial’s Long hope you do not mind…..
Debbie,
Your photography is so pretty! I really like the old, vintage feel of the whatever you call it
It looks like you have some wonderful inspiration with your party! Can wait to visit everyone
blessings,
karianne
It looks great…and I love your photo effects! Enjoy this holiday week! Hugs!
Yep, it’s part of a minnow bucket…or as some say, a bait bucket. My step-dad, dad and uncles all had them.
Candles would be great in it at night.

Hey Debbie…that is a minnow bucket…my dad had one…I remember it!….love what you did with it!!….love old rusty metal things…!
My brother used to use one like that to keep minnows in when he was fishing. Tie the handle to a low hanging branch and float it in the water close by and the bait would stay fresh and active. Nifty idea to put candles inside
I have repainted entire rooms and hubby didn’t notice for days…lol. I like your little bucket as a planter. I have seen these before at flea markets and never knew what they were. Thanks for hosting this party. I hope to find some new blogs to read.
Hugs, Angie
Debbie,
I have a minnow bucket insert like yours and I put a strand of twinkle lights in mine. It makes great shadows. I love the idea of using it as a planter as you have done. Thank you for hosting!
Kathleen
I have a nice but old minnow bucket like this. Now I know what to do with it.
Thanks so much for your inspiration!!!
I probably would have picked that up too. I love the rustic look of it and with candles, I’m sure it gives a nice glow!!! It looks great on your bench as it is but I’m sure it will find its way around your place. Love you gate and the saying on it!
I’m fairly certain that you have what is called a bait bucket or a minnow bait bucket. It was used to hold your faishing bait:) I love repurposing and you have a great idea. One of my favorites is a small old black pot that belonged to the maid who worked for my husband’s grandmother many, many years ago. It looks wonderful holding my red geraniums!
It’s a minnow bucket. Maybe it would be fun to create a little fishing vignette….make some funky lures, etc. Add a sign about fishing and your hubs should love it!
Best wishes for An Extraordinary Independence Day Celebration!!
Hi Debbie, love your minnow bucket, I too have a few I love which we still use to fish! Thanks for hosting such a fun party. Happy 4th.
Anne
It looks great planted up!! (…wondering how long I have to wait to use my husband’s old one…he still uses it often) ~grin~
Thanks for hosting Debbie
